Kid Project — Ages 4 and up
Needs: carrot top + a shallow dish + water · See results in 3–5 days

This is magic. Cut the top off a carrot from the kitchen, put it in water, and watch it grow beautiful green feathery leaves in just a few days. You are not throwing away food — you are making a mini garden from something that was going in the compost!

🛒 What you need

  • A carrot from the kitchen or shop (any size works)
  • A knife or scissors (ask a grown-up to help cut)
  • A shallow dish or bowl
  • Water
  • A bright windowsill

🌱 How to do it

  1. Ask a grown-up to cut the top 3–4cm off the carrot — the bit with the green stalks on top.
  2. Place the carrot top flat-side down in a shallow dish with just enough water to cover the bottom (about 1cm). The cut side goes in the water, the top stays dry.
  3. Put the dish on a sunny windowsill.
  4. Change the water every couple of days so it stays fresh.
  5. Watch what happens!

🔍 What you will see

  • Day 1–2: Nothing much yet — be patient.
  • Day 3–5: Tiny green shoots start appearing from the top! 🎉
  • Week 2: Feathery green leaves appear — they look like little ferns. These are carrot greens and they are actually edible!
  • Week 3+: Keep it watered. You can eventually plant the whole thing in soil to keep it growing.

❓ Why does this work?

The carrot top has a growing point called a meristem — a tiny part of the plant that is always ready to make new growth. Even when you cut the carrot, the meristem stays alive and just needs water and light to start making leaves again. Plants are incredibly determined to keep living!
