Almost everything sold in a shop was made by someone who learned how to make it. Butter, cheese, bread, soap, dye, vinegar, candles — all of these were household skills before the industrial revolution turned them into factory products. When you learn to make something instead of buying it, two things happen: you save money, and you understand the world better.
These three projects combine homestead skills with real science — you will learn about solar energy, plant chemistry, and the power of using everything so nothing goes to waste.
The sun delivers more energy to Earth in one hour than humanity uses in an entire year. A solar oven can reach temperatures of 150°C on a clear day — hot enough to cook rice, bake bread, pasteurise water, or melt chocolate. Using the sun to cook costs exactly nothing.
Build a solar oven from a pizza box and cook something in it. This is physics you can eat.
What you need: 1 pizza box · aluminium foil · black paper or paint · clear plastic wrap or a glass pane · a pencil or stick to prop open the lid · what to cook (chocolate squares, cheese on bread, sliced fruit)
How to build it:
- Cut a flap in the top of the pizza box lid (leave 3cm border on all sides). This flap will fold up.
- Cover the inside of the flap with aluminium foil — shiny side out. This is your reflector.
- Cover the hole left by the flap with clear plastic wrap — this is your "window" that traps heat.
- Line the inside bottom of the box with black paper or paint it black — black absorbs heat.
- Prop the reflector flap open at about 45°. Place your food inside on the black surface.
- Point the reflector toward the sun. Position the box so sunlight bounces off the foil through the window onto the food.
- Leave for 30–60 minutes on a sunny day. Check the temperature with a kitchen thermometer if you have one.
The science: Foil reflects sunlight into the box. The plastic window lets light in but traps heat (the greenhouse effect). Black absorbs heat. You have built a greenhouse + reflector system that concentrates solar energy. This is the same principle used in large-scale solar power plants.
Before synthetic dyes existed, every colour in fabric came from plants, insects, and minerals. You can dye fabric beautiful colours using things from your homestead kitchen — with no chemicals.
What you need: Old white cotton T-shirts or white cotton yarn/fabric · a pot · a mordant (helps colour stick — use white vinegar or alum) · your dye plants
Dye plants and the colours they make:
- 🧅 Onion skins (yellow/gold) — the most reliable natural dye. Collect the dry outer skins from brown onions.
- 🫐 Berries and red cabbage (blue/purple) — intense but can fade
- 🥕 Beetroot (pink/red) — vivid but fades in sunlight
- 🌿 Avocado skins and pits (dusty pink) — surprisingly beautiful
- ☕ Coffee or strong black tea (brown/tan) — easy and colourfast
How to dye:
- Soak your fabric in a mordant bath (1 part white vinegar to 4 parts water) for 1 hour. This helps colour stick.
- Simmer your dye plants in water for 30–60 minutes until the water is a deep rich colour. Strain out the plant material.
- Add your damp fabric to the dye bath. Simmer on low heat for 1 hour, turning occasionally.
- Leave to cool in the dye. The longer it sits, the deeper the colour.
- Rinse in cold water. Hang to dry in shade (sun fades natural dyes).
Every homestead "waste" — onion skins, avocado pits, coffee grounds — is a potential dye. Zero waste means finding the value in everything.
At the end of each week, the homestead kitchen has vegetable off-cuts, leftover cooked grains, herb stems, and odds and ends. In most households, this goes in the bin. In a homestead kitchen, it becomes Sunday's soup.
The rule: there is no recipe. The ingredients change every week depending on what is available. This teaches the most important cooking skill — improvisation.
How to make the no-waste soup:
- During the week, keep a container in the fridge for vegetable scraps: carrot tops and peels, celery leaves, onion offcuts, herb stems, cooked leftovers.
- On Sunday, start with a base: fry one onion and two garlic cloves in oil until soft.
- Add all your scraps and leftovers. Cover with water or chicken broth if you have it.
- Add seasoning: salt, pepper, a bay leaf, whatever herbs are growing in the garden.
- Simmer for 30–45 minutes. Taste and adjust.
- Blend some or all of it if it needs to come together. Add a handful of pasta or rice in the last 10 minutes if it needs bulk.
Kids' job: Be the Head Chef. Decide what goes in. Taste as you go. Season it. Name the soup each week — "Monday Off-Cut Minestrone", "Garden Scrap Potage", whatever sounds good.
Keep a Soup Journal: what did you put in? What did it taste like? What would you change? Over months, you will develop real cooking instincts. Professional chefs call this "fridge cooking" — it is the mark of someone who truly understands flavour.
Every skill in this lesson — solar cooking, natural dyes, no-waste cooking — was normal knowledge 150 years ago. Then factories made everything cheaper and faster, and people forgot how to make things themselves. On a homestead, you remember. And every time you make something instead of buying it, you are a little more free.
