Safe Sips and Splashes: Managing Water Hazards on Your Homestead

Out here on the homestead, water is life. We rely on it for our gardens, our animals, and of course, for our families to drink and use every day. But with every dam, borehole, or rain tank comes a responsibility – ensuring that this vital resource is managed safely. I’ve seen enough near-misses and heard enough stories over the years to know that taking water safety for granted is a risk none of us can afford. This week, we're going to roll up our sleeves and look at how to secure those open water sources, make sure your drinking water is truly safe, and teach your children the respect and caution water deserves. It’s about peace of mind, knowing your family can thrive without unnecessary risks.

Securing Open Water Sources: Dams, Ponds, and Reservoirs

An open dam or a large pond might look beautiful, but it's a serious hazard, especially with young children or even curious animals around. The first line of defence is always a good fence. For a permanent water body, I highly recommend a fence that is at least 1.2 metres high, preferably 1.5 metres if you have particularly adventurous little ones. Diamond mesh or Bonnox fencing are excellent choices as they are difficult to climb and durable. You'll want to install sturdy treated gum poles every 2.5 to 3 metres, set at least 60cm deep in concrete for stability. The gate is crucial – it must be self-closing and self-latching, with a child-proof mechanism that requires lifting and pulling, not just a simple push. Check these latches weekly for smooth operation. For a typical small dam of, say, 50x30 metres, you're looking at roughly 160 metres of fencing. Materials alone could range from R80 to R150 per metre for a decent diamond mesh or Bonnox, excluding poles and concrete. Beyond fencing, keep the area immediately surrounding your water body clear of dense bushes or tall reeds that could hide a child or an animal in distress. Consider placing a lifebuoy or a long rope with a float nearby, visible and easily accessible, for emergency use.

Boreholes, Tanks, and Other Water Points

Even smaller water sources need attention. Your borehole, for instance, should have a secure, lockable steel cap. Not only does this prevent accidental falls, but it also stops debris, animals, or even malicious tampering from contaminating your precious groundwater. Ensure the concrete slab around the borehole casing is intact and free of cracks to prevent surface water runoff from seeping into the borehole. For rain tanks, like the common JoJo tanks or older concrete reservoirs, make sure the lids are always secure and properly fitted. Heavy rain, especially during a Highveld summer storm or a KZN coastal downpour, can quickly overflow an unprotected tank, creating slippery surfaces or unexpected deep puddles. Children are naturally drawn to water, so a securely latched tank lid is non-negotiable. If you have any open water troughs for animals, ensure they are not deep enough for a small child to fall into and become trapped. For larger troughs, consider placing heavy rocks or bricks inside to reduce the water depth significantly.

Testing Your Drinking Water for Safety

You can't see most contaminants, and that's why testing your drinking water is so important. Whether it's from a borehole, a spring, or collected rainwater, don't assume it's pure. I recommend getting your primary drinking water source tested at least once a year, and definitely after any major flood or prolonged heavy rain, especially if you're in an area with a lot of agricultural runoff. You'll want to test for common microbiological contaminants like E. coli, as well as chemical parameters such as nitrates, pH, and total dissolved solids. Look for a SANAS-accredited laboratory – your local municipal health department might offer this service, or they can point you to private labs. A basic microbiological test typically costs between R300 and R600, while a comprehensive chemical analysis might be R800 to R1500. If your tests come back positive for contaminants, don't panic. For bacterial issues, boiling your water for 3 minutes is a temporary fix. For a permanent solution, consider a good quality UV water purifier or a robust filtration system, perhaps with a sediment filter followed by an activated carbon filter, installed at your point of use.

Generational Wisdom: Observing Water's Health

Long before laboratories and fancy testing equipment, homesteaders across Southern Africa had to rely on their senses and accumulated wisdom to understand the health of their water. They knew that water is not just a resource, but a living part of the land. Take a moment to truly observe your water sources. Healthy water often has a subtle, earthy smell – never foul or overly chemical. Look at its clarity: is it consistently murky, or does it clear quickly after rain? Notice the life around and in it. A dam teeming with frogs, dragonflies, and healthy aquatic plants is often a good sign. If fish are dying off suddenly, or if there's an unusual film on the surface, those are red flags that demand closer inspection. Traditional knowledge also taught a deep respect for water scarcity, especially in regions like the Karoo. Every drop was precious, and understanding the flow of underground springs or the patterns of seasonal vleis was critical for survival. This tradition of observation and respect for water's natural state is a powerful tool, complementing our modern scientific tests.

  1. Walk the Perimeter: Take your family on a walk around every open water source on your property – dams, large ponds, even significant ditches that collect water. Check fences for any weak spots, broken wires, or gates that don't latch securely. Note down any repairs needed and assign someone to get the materials.
  2. Secure Your Borehole or Tanks: If your borehole cap isn't lockable, or if any of your rain tank lids are loose, make it a priority to secure them. A simple padlock and chain can often do the trick for a tank, and a local welder can fabricate a lockable cap for your borehole if you don't have one.
  3. Research Water Testing Labs: Call your local municipality's health department or do a quick online search for "SANAS accredited water testing lab [your nearest town/city]". Get a quote for a basic microbiological test for your drinking water source. Knowing who to call is the first step to getting that peace of mind.
